Large Qing Dynasty Dragon & Phoenix Porcelain Vase in Classic Blue & White 14 3/4 inches tall Widest diameter – 7 1/2 inches Bottom diameter – 5 inches Mouth diameter – 5 5/8 inches Looks to be Qing dynasty. The dragon is four-clawed. A very large and gorgeous piece, but unsigned. The painting is done very well, as if by a master. Repair on the rim, done to be near-imperceptible. The area is shown in the last two pictures. I have over fifty years of experience in working with antique Chinese porcelain. My father had an antique shop before he retired, and most of these items are from there. I examine the items and attempt to show and describe them accurately, including any damages. As these items are very old, I may not be entirely sure of the exact age, or that there are no small damages in discreet places, but I try my best. The Martin-Hurst collection is listed as a provenance for many excellent examples of the Imperial Chinese porcelain and many of his wares are referenced in various publication including G. Williamson book George C. The Book of Famille Rose. Even now, parts of his collection reappeared from time to time on sales at Sotheby’s (2008), Bonhams (2009) and Christie’s (2006). Other parts of his collection are in the world best museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art (NY). Diameter at Midpoint: 26cm. For your consideration is this rare six-lobed blue and white’melon’ shape globular vase. Each lobe is decorated with a five claws dragon. Rising from the water, the Chinese dragon symbolizes benevolence, prosperity, longevity and the renewal of life. Ancient Chinese believed the dragon brought rain, good harvests and fertility. The dragon is yang and associated with the east and spring; and a symbol of the emperor when it has five claws. On the neck there is an upside down bat fu. On top of an ancient Chinese coin which can be a visual pun for “good fortune” or happiness fu. Because both characters are pronounced. Often the bat is shown flying upside down because the character dao. Meaning “to have arrived”. Therefore, if a person were to say “the bat is flying upside down” a listener could just as easily hear this as “happiness has arrived” which, of course, has a very auspicious connotation. Additionally, “a bat descending from the sky”. Sounds exactly like “happiness descends from heaven” fuzi tianlai. A Chinese charm or coin with a square central hole is sometimes referred to as an “eye coin” yanqian. Is pronounced the same as the word for “before” qian. Therefore, a picture of a. Creates a visual pun since saying there is a “bat on the coin” (fu zai yan qian) sounds exactly like saying “happiness is before your eyes” fu zai yan qian. Are on the other lobes on the neck which signifies the first month of the lunar calendar. The plum symbolizes courage and hope because it blossoms first and bravely stands against the dangers of winter. Fine Chinese Ming Chenghua Style. Superb Chinese Ming Style Enamel Dragon Blue and White Globular Porcelain Vase. An outstanding Chinese blue and white globular porcelain vase. It has a truly one of the best underglazed iron red dragon. The combination of blue white and underglazed iron red color is among the most difficult technique of ceramic making. Because of the huge difference of the firing temperatures of both colors, most underglazed iron red painting would be melted together and lose its strokes and shapes. Take a look at our close up pictures of the dragon of this vase, every stroke is clear. It has some small green spot, evidence of true underglazed iron red color. The dragon wrapped its body around the globular body and neck of this vase. The blue waves around the dragon is painted with large amount of individual strokes, both time consuming and forms great detail. Underneath it has a 6 character Qing Yongzheng seal mark. It’s in good condition without any major imperfection, only normal wear and tear. 24.5 or 62cm tall. This is truly a museum quality collectible. Any serious collector shouldn’t miss this one.
